The purpose of this comprehensive course is to increase the basic knowledge and understanding of the concepts of WHMIS in your workplace.
The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is changing. Since 1988, WHMIS has been Canada’s hazard communication system for workplace chemicals. The new WHMIS is known as WHMIS 2015 and now incorporates the Globally Harmonized System (GHS). GHS stands for the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals.
The GHS is a system that defines and classifies the hazards of chemical products, and communicates health and safety information on labels and material safety data sheets.
The transition to WHMIS 2015 began on February 11, 2015 when the amended federal Hazardous Products Act and new Hazardous Products Regulations came into force and it will end on December 1, 2018. During this transition period, WHMIS 1988 will be slowly phased out and employers must ensure that workers are trained on:
-
Products with WHMIS 1988 labels and material safety data sheets for as long as they are still used in the workplace; and,
-
Products with WHMIS 2015 labels and safety data sheets, as soon as practicable after these products enter the workplace and, in some cases, before they are used.
WHMIS training is needed for: Any worker who comes into contact, or could possibly come into contact, with controlled substances or products or hazardous materials covered under WHMIS should take this course.
